A perennial plant of the Onagraceae family. Native to South America and Chile, it was introduced to Japan at the end of the Edo period, where it was planted in gardens for decorative purposes, but has now escaped and is occasionally seen growing wild in various places. The stem is upright, 60-90 cm tall, and the basal leaves form a rosette. The leaves are alternate, linear lanceolate, and sparsely serrated. From May to August, yellow four-petaled flowers bloom one at a time in the leaf axils. The flowers open in the evening, turn red by the next morning, and wilt. The capsule is four-lobed, and the lobes are slightly curled. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
