An archipelago in an arc about 2,726 km between Alaska and the Kamchatka Peninsula. Also known as the Aleutian. Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, volcanic and seismic belt, it separates the Pacific Ocean from the Bering Sea, and is home to Unalaska, Attu Island, and Amchitka Island, where the largest underground nuclear test in history was conducted in 1971. In 1867, the United States purchased most of Alaska from Russia as part of the country. The western end is Russian territory. There are many volcanoes. It was a fierce battleground in World War II. The indigenous people are the Aleuts.
