Kayah State (English spelling)

Japanese: カヤー[州]（英語表記）Kayah

One of the seven states in the Union of Myanmar. Area: 11,700 km2. Population: 230,000 (1994). The state capital is Loikaw. Administratively, it is divided into six townships. Before World War II, it was called Karenni State and was indirectly ruled by a governor-general through three hereditary lords (sao pyah). In 1951, it was renamed to its current name. It is located in central-eastern Myanmar, bordering Shan State to the north, Karen State to the south, and Thailand to the east. The Salween River runs north to south near the border with Thailand. Due to the mountainous terrain, the main products are forest products, mainly teak and other tropical hardwoods, and mineral products from the Maw Kyi mines, such as tin, tungsten, and antimony.

ミャンマー連邦に含まれる七つの州のひとつ。面積1万1700km2。人口23万(1994)。州都はロイコー。行政的には6郡に細分される。第2次大戦前はカレンニー州という名称で，世襲的藩侯(サオピャー)3人を通じて総督の間接統治を受けていた。1951年，現名に改称。ミャンマー中東部に位置し，北はシャン州，南はカレン州，東はタイ国と境を接している。タイとの国境寄りをサルウィン川が南北に縦断している。山岳地が多いため，チークやその他の熱帯産硬質材を中心とする林産物と，スズ，タングステン，アンチモニーなどモーチー鉱山の鉱産物とが主産物。
