A coloring material used to attach to seals and stamps for imprinting. It is also called vermilion ink because it is often red. High-quality vermilion ink for official use and for seals is made from vermilion (mercury sulfide), while general vermilion ink for office use is made from metallic vermilion or substitute vermilion. Usually, these ingredients are mixed with castor oil and fiber and kneaded together, but there is also sponge vermilion ink, which is made by soaking the pad with vermilion oil instead of fiber. Ink was first used to imprint seals on paintings and calligraphy during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period in China, and was introduced to Japan with Buddhism and began to be used as official seals during the Nara period. It became popular after the Meiji period, when the custom of using a signature seal as proof became established. Sponge vermilion ink, which is currently widely used as general office vermilion ink, was developed after the Second World War and quickly became popular due to its ease of use.
