A former town in Taki District, eastern Hyogo Prefecture. The main settlement is in the center of the Sasayama Basin, where the Sasayama River flows west. It is an important location on the San'in Road, and prospered as a castle town of the Sasayama Domain, where the Matsudaira and Aoyama clans of the Fudai clan lived. After the Meiji period, it became a military town. The town mainly produces rice and beef cattle, and also produces Tanba chestnuts, black soybeans, and matsutake mushrooms. It is known as the birthplace of the chief brewers for sake brewing areas such as Nada Gogo. In 1975, it merged with Joto Town and Taki Town. In April 1999, it merged with Nishiki Town, Tannan Town, and Konda Town in Taki District to become a city, Sasayama City. 187.46 km2 . Population: 22,223 (1995). 兵庫県東部,多紀郡の旧町。主集落は篠山川が西流する篠山盆地の中心地で,山陰道の要地,譜代の松平氏,青山氏が居城する篠山藩の城下町として繁栄,明治以後は軍隊町となった。米作,肉牛飼育を主とし,丹波グリ,黒大豆,マツタケの産もある。灘五郷などの酒造地への杜氏(とうじ)出身地として知られる。1975年城東町,多紀町と合体。1999年4月に,多紀郡西紀(にしき)町,丹南町,今田(こんだ)町と合併し市制,篠山市となる。187.46km2。2万2223人(1995)。
