When a country gives hospitality and protection to political asylum seekers from another country and refuses to hand them over to the country of origin. Also called asylum. Political protection is given when a country's government or its diplomatic representatives (embassies, consulates, etc.) accept and protect fugitives from the lawful jurisdiction of another country or from imminent danger of violence. This is widely accepted in terms of international law and general principles of humanity, and is practiced by most countries. However, states are under no legal obligation to provide political protection, and individuals cannot claim it as a right. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
