Collection of elegant words - Gagenshuran

A collection of examples of archaic language. Written by Ishikawa Masamochi. The six volumes starting with I-ka were published in 1826 (Bunsei 9), the three volumes starting with Yo-na in 1849 (Kaei 2), and the rest have been passed down in manuscript form, but were published in 1887 (Meiji 20) as "Zouho Gagen Shuran." It mainly includes examples of archaic language from Heian period kana literature, as well as ancient readings from Chinese classics such as the Kojiki and Manyoshu, Konjaku Monogatarishu, and Monzen, and is arranged in alphabetical order, with occasional brief explanations. It was compiled to serve as a standard for creating pseudo-classical Japanese. It covers most of the vocabulary of ancient language, and provides detailed examples and sources, making it useful for the study of archaic language.

古語用例集。石川雅望(まさもち)著。い～かの6冊は1826年（文政9）、よ～なの3冊は1849年（嘉永2）刊で、以下は写本で伝わったが、1887年（明治20）に『増補雅言集覧』として刊行された。平安時代の仮名文学書を中心に、記紀万葉や『今昔物語集』および『文選(もんぜん)』などの漢籍の古訓などからも古語の用例を集めて、いろは順に配列し、ときに簡単な語釈を施す。擬古文などをつくる際の規範とするために編集されたものである。古代語の語彙(ごい)のほとんどを網羅し、用例、出典も詳しく示してあって、古語の研究には有益である。
