The temple was built for Emperor Daigo's mother, Fujiwara no Inshi, on the site of the residence of her grandfather, Miyaji Yamasu, the district governor of Uji County, with Shoshun as its founder. This is the founding of the temple, and the most likely date is 900 (3rd year of Shotai).
