Occupying the southeastern part of Attica on the Greek mainland, this region was home to some of the largest silver mines in the Mediterranean world in ancient times. It is also called Laureion or Laurium. Many ruins of mines and ore-dressing plants are still scattered around today. The history of silver mining in the Laurion mines stretches from the Mycenaean period to the Roman period, but its heyday was about half a century after the discovery of a large vein in the area in 483 BC, and in the second half of the 4th century BC. The abundance of high-quality silver coins minted from the silver is thought to have been one of the factors that supported the economic development of Athens during this period.

ギリシア本土アッティカ地方の南東部を占め，古代において地中海世界有数の銀鉱を擁した地域。ラウレイオンLaureion，ラウリウムLauriumともいう。今なお鉱坑と選鉱場の遺跡が多数散在する。ラウリオン銀山採掘の歴史はミュケナイ時代からローマ時代に及ぶが，この地域に大鉱脈が発見された前483年から約半世紀の間と，前4世紀の後半とがその最盛期であった。その銀で鋳造された良質の銀貨に恵まれたことが，この時期のアテナイの経済的発展を支える一因をなしたと考えられる。
