A portrait painter of Dutch descent active in England. Also known as Lili. His real name was Pieter van der Faes. His name is thought to have come from his paternal family crest, a lily. He was born in Soest, Germany. He trained in Haarlem and traveled to England in 1641. After serving the Duke of Northumberland, he gained the patronage of Charles II and became the chief royal painter during the Restoration. His portraits, which combined the elegant style of van Dyck (who traveled to England in 1432 and died in London in 1441) with 17th-century Dutch realism and added elegant colors, were popular among the British aristocracy of the time (he is also mentioned in the diary of S. Pepys).

イギリスで活躍したオランダ系の肖像画家。リーリともいう。本名ファン･デル･ファースPieter van der Faes。名は父方の家紋のユリに由来するものと考えられる。ドイツのゾースト生れ。ハールレムで修業し，1641年渡英。ノーサンバーランド公に仕えたのち，チャールズ2世の愛顧を受け，王政復古時代に首席王室画家となる。ファン･デイク(1432年渡英し，41年ロンドンで没)のエレガントな様式と17世紀オランダのリアリズムとを統合し，かつ流麗な色彩を加味したその肖像画は，当時のイギリス貴族社会で人気を博した(S.ピープスの日記にも言及)。
