…Carbon has a medium electronegativity of 2.5, and in addition to bonding with metals or metallic elements to form carbides, it also produces inorganic compounds such as carbon dioxide, carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride, and various carbonates, but its most distinctive feature is that it forms a huge number of different organic compounds. This is because carbon is the most typical nonmetallic element, and it exhibits the phenomenon of catenation, in which atoms of the same element bond together in a chain. This tendency is strongest among all elements for carbon, and generally occurs less frequently the further an element is from carbon in the periodic table. …
