Cetyl alcohol - Cetyl alcohol

A higher alcohol with 16 carbon atoms bonded in a straight chain. It is also called 1-hexadecanol. In Europe and the United States, whales were caught in large numbers to obtain oil for lighting, and cetyl alcohol was prepared from spermaceti, one of the main components of spermaceti obtained from whales. It is a white solid that dissolves in organic solvents such as alcohol and ether, but not in water. It decomposes when distilled at normal pressure. It has been used in medicines and other fields as a base for ointments. The sodium salt of this sulfate ester is used as a detergent.

炭素16個が直鎖状に結合した高級アルコール。1-ヘキサデカノールともいう。欧米では照明用の油を得るために多量のクジラを捕獲したが、セチルアルコールはクジラから得られる鯨ろうの主成分の一つで、これから調製された。白色の固体で、アルコールやエーテルなどの有機溶媒には溶けるが、水には溶けない。常圧で蒸留すると分解する。軟膏(なんこう)の基剤として医薬品などに用いられてきた。この硫酸エステルのナトリウム塩は洗剤として利用される。
