Also called a buoy. A structure that floats on or in the sea and has no propulsive power. Buoys are broadly divided into those that are moored to the seabed or other structures, and those that are carried away by ocean currents or wind. The former are often used to prevent accidents at sea, such as marking the location of shallows or rocks, or to mark the location of instruments installed on the seabed. The latter are often used to investigate ocean currents. Recently, it has become possible to observe the position of buoys using satellites, and attempts are being made to find the path of the Kuroshio Current by dropping a buoy into a large ocean current such as the Kuroshio Current and tracking it. ブイともいう。海上あるいは海中に浮んでいて推進力をもたない構造物。ブイは海底その他の構築物に係留されているものと,海流や風に流されていくものに大きく分けられる。前者は浅瀬や岩の位置の標示などの海難防止のために用いられたり,海底に設置された計器類の位置標示などに用いられることが多い。後者は海流の様子を調査するのによく用いられる。最近では人工衛星によってブイの位置を観測することが可能になり,黒潮などの大海流にブイを投じ,それを追跡することによって黒潮の流路を探る試みがなされている。
