British physicist. His real name was John William Strutt. He graduated from Cambridge University and conducted research at home. He became a member of the Royal Society in 1873, director of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University in 1879, professor at the Royal Institute in 1888, and president of the Royal Society in 1905. He conducted extensive research on sound, light, elastic waves, electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, etc., and derived Rayleigh scattering, Rayleigh waves, and the Rayleigh-Jeans law regarding blackbody radiation. He also performed precise measurements of electrical resistance and gas density, and discovered argon together with Ramsey in 1894. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1904.
