Mr. Yamada

Many people take the Yamada family name from place names, but the most famous of these is the Yamada family of the Owari Genji clan, based in Yamada County, Owari Province. According to the Sonpi Bunmyaku, Shigesada, the son of Shigezane, a descendant of the Seiwa Genji Mitsumasa lineage, took the Yamada family name. His brothers also took place names in Owari, such as Urano and Ashiki, as surnames. In the Jisho-Juei civil war, they joined the army of Minamoto no Yukiie, and were defeated by the army of Taira no Shigehira at Sunomata River in March 1181 (the first year of Youwa), with Yamada Shigemitsu and many other family members killed. However, after the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate, the name of Yamada Shigezumi appears in the Azuma Kagami as one of the powerful vassals. 地名に由来して山田氏を名のる者は多いが，中でも著名なのは尾張国山田郡を本拠とする尾張源氏の山田氏である。《尊卑分脈》によれば，清和源氏満政流の重実の子重貞が山田氏を名のった。彼の兄弟も浦野，葦敷など尾張の地名を名字とする。治承･寿永の内乱には源行家軍に加わり1181年(養和1)3月墨俣川で平重衡軍に大敗し，山田重満をはじめ多くの一族が討たれたが，鎌倉幕府が開かれて後は有力な御家人の一人として山田重澄の名が《吾妻鏡》に見える。
