1851‐1927 A Lithuanian nationalist leader and folklorist. After graduating from Moscow University's Department of History and Philology, he went on to medical school. While working as a doctor in hospitals in Bulgaria and other Eastern European countries, he played an active role as a leader in the nationalist movement to achieve independence for his native Lithuania from Russia. In 1883, he brought together Lithuanian intellectuals to found the journal Aušra, and became a central figure in cultural activities. In 1907, he founded the Academic Society in Vilnius, serving as its president for the rest of his life, and in 1918 brought about his country's independence.
