Jonas Basanavičius

1851‐1927
A Lithuanian nationalist leader and folklorist. After graduating from Moscow University's Department of History and Philology, he went on to medical school. While working as a doctor in hospitals in Bulgaria and other Eastern European countries, he played an active role as a leader in the nationalist movement to achieve independence for his native Lithuania from Russia. In 1883, he brought together Lithuanian intellectuals to found the journal Aušra, and became a central figure in cultural activities. In 1907, he founded the Academic Society in Vilnius, serving as its president for the rest of his life, and in 1918 brought about his country's independence.

リトアニアの民族運動の指導者，民俗学者。モスクワ大学歴史･文献学部卒業後，さらに医学部に進んだ。ブルガリアその他東欧各国の病院で医師を務めるかたわら，祖国リトアニアのロシアからの独立を果たすため民族運動の指導者として活躍した。1883年リトアニアの知識人を結集して機関紙《曙Aušra》を創刊，文化活動の中心人物となる。1907年ビルニュスに〈学術協会〉を設立，終生会長を務め，18年祖国の独立をもたらした。
