Year of death: February 28, 1912 (Meiji 45) Year of birth: July 28, Tempo 7 (September 8, 1836) A samurai of the Satsuma (Kagoshima) domain in the late Edo period, a Meiji government official, and a poet. He was the son of Takasaki Goroemon, who tried to realize the early succession of Shimazu Nariakira to his title and was ordered to commit seppuku in the so-called Oyura Incident. He was implicated in the incident and exiled to Amami Oshima in 1850. He was pardoned in the same year and returned to his domain. In 1862, he accompanied Shimazu Hisamitsu to Kyoto. In August of the following year, he visited Aizu domain (Fukushima prefecture) samurai Akizuki Teijiro and Prince Nakagawanomiya Asahiko to request that they expel the Sonno Joi faction, which led to the coup of August 18th and led to his appointment as a caretaker in Kyoto. In 1867, he opposed the policy of overthrowing the shogunate by force, and was isolated from the mainstream of the domain government. As a result, his official career after the Meiji Restoration was not particularly glamorous, and he served as a junior councilor in the House of Representatives, assistant samurai, imperial court advisor, and privy advisor. He also studied under Hatta Tomonori and was a poet of the Keien school. In 1888, he was appointed director of the Poetry Department, a position he held until the end of his life.
