Leningrad Ballet

A Russian ballet company. Its official name was previously the Kirov Leningrad State Opera and Ballet Theatre (commonly known as the Kirov Theatre). In 1991 it reverted to its former name, the Mariinsky Theatre. The theatre's history dates back to the Bolshoi (Kamenny) Theatre in St. Petersburg, founded in 1783, but the origins of the ballet company date back even further, to 1742, when graduates of the choreographic school, which opened in 1738, performed in a court dance drama. Foreign instructors: Russian dancers who had mastered the art of Western classical dance had matured to the point where they could perform works incorporating their own country's folk dances by the beginning of the 19th century, but the attitude of learning from developed countries remained unchanged, and instructors and dancers were invited from abroad until the end of the 19th century.
