Greater East Asian War - Daitoa Senso

This was the name given to the Pacific War by the Japanese leadership at the time. It was born from the government's announcement on December 12, 1941 (Showa 16), immediately after the start of the Pacific War, that "the current war against the United States and Britain will be called the Greater East Asia War, including the China Incident." While the term "Pacific War" was used from the American perspective, this term was more in line with Japan's war aims, which were to focus on East Asia, with China at the center. However, since it contains a hint of Japanese propaganda about a "holy war" to liberate "Greater East Asia," it has not been used much since the war.

太平洋戦争に対する当時の日本指導者層による呼称。太平洋戦争開始直後の1941年（昭和16）12月12日、政府が「今次の対米英戦は、支那(しな)事変をも含め大東亜戦争と呼称す」としたことから生まれた。太平洋戦争という呼称がアメリカ側からみた呼称であるのに対し、中国を中心とする東アジアを主戦場とする日本の戦争目的により合致してはいるが、「大東亜」解放の「聖戦」とした日本側の宣伝臭が含まれているため、戦後はあまり使用されていない。
