Delacroix

Japanese:
Delacroix
A representative French painter of Romanticism. Born in Charenton near Paris. A pupil of Guérin, he learned more from past masters such as Rubens and Veronese than from his teacher. He made his debut at the Salon in 1822 with Dante's Boat (Louvre Museum), and in 1824 he exhibited Massacre at Chios (Louvre Museum), becoming a standard-bearer of anti-classicism. He traveled to England in 1825 and Morocco in 1832. The latter brought a tendency towards Orientalism to Delacroix's art. Many of his works were inspired by literary themes, but he also produced monumental religious and historical paintings, portraits, and animal paintings, and many masterpieces of printmaking. He also left behind a diary and a treatise on art. His representative works include Liberty Leading the People (1830, Louvre Museum), The Death of King Sardanapalos (1828, Louvre Museum), Women of Algiers (1834, Louvre Museum), and illustrations (lithographs) for Faust (1828) and Hamlet (1834-1864).
