It is a deciduous or evergreen shrub of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). It is found in the Mediterranean coastal regions, North Africa, and the Canary Islands. It was introduced to Japan during the Hoei era (1704-1711). Its name comes from the Portuguese word retama. The twigs are gray-green and slender. The leaves are sparsely alternate, lanceolate, and 3 cm long. From June to September, the racemes grow at the ends of the branches, and fragrant yellow butterfly-shaped flowers bloom sparsely. The fruits are linear and short-haired. Young branches are used for knitting. It is propagated by seed and green branch cuttings. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in warm areas, but it is difficult to grow near Tokyo due to its poor cold resistance.
