NHK Symphony Orchestra

NHK Symphony Orchestra

Japan's leading orchestra. Abbreviated as "NHK Symphony Orchestra". Founded on October 5, 1926 (Taisho 15) under the name of the New Symphony Orchestra (Shinkyo), it began holding regular concerts in February of the following year (Showa 2). At the time, it was mainly conducted by Konoe Hidemaro and Josef Baltasar Konig (1875-1932). In 1942, it was renamed the Japan Symphony Orchestra. It also frequently appeared on radio broadcasts under the name of the JOAK Symphony Orchestra, and gave concerts with conductors such as Weingartner and Rosenstock.

After the Second World War, the orchestra deepened its relationship with NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), and in August 1951, it was renamed the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and although it was a foundation, NHK was in charge of its operations. After the Second World War, Wilhelm Schuchter, Yuzo Toyama (1931-), Hiroyuki Iwaki, and others served as principal conductors or in a similar position. For a while after the 1960s, the orchestra did not have a principal conductor, and regular concerts were held with honorary conductors such as Keilberth, Matacic, Rosenstock, Sawallisch, Stein, Suitner, and Blomstedt, but in 1996, the 70th anniversary of the orchestra's founding, Charles Dutoit became the principal conductor (and in 1998, the first music director in the history of the NHK Symphony Orchestra). Vladimir Ashkenazy took over as the second music director in September 2004, succeeding Dutoit. Regular concerts, which have been held without interruption since the first one in 1927 (Showa 2), are held annually at NHK Hall and Suntory Hall, totaling 27 programs and 54 performances in 2002. In addition, the orchestra also holds approximately 140 concerts a year, including performances in regional cities, special concerts, and overseas performances.
