A town in Ikoma County in northwest Nara Prefecture, at the eastern foot of the Ikoma Mountains. The main settlement was a temple town for Mt. Shigi, and flourished as a river port for water transportation on the Yamato River in the early modern period. It is served by the Kintetsu Ikoma Line, the Kansai Main Line, and a cable car to Mt. Shigi, and in recent years has seen a noticeable shift to residential areas. The town produces strawberries, persimmons, peaches, and grapes, and is a specialty of thongs.
