Regulus - Regulus (English spelling)

The proper name of the star alpha in the constellation Leo. It has long been called "king" or "king" in Babylonia, Greece, and Arabia, but the Latin name "little king Regulus" was first used by Copernicus. It is a star with a magnitude of 1.35 that shines in the spring evening sky, a main sequence star of spectral type B7V, and a surface temperature of about 13,000K. Its position on the celestial sphere is 10:08 hours right ascension and +11 degrees 58 minutes declination at the 2000 equinox. It is 77 light years away. Its mass is about 5 times that of the Sun, and its radius is 3.8 times. It rotates at a high speed of at least 330 kilometers per second on the equatorial surface. Regulus is a visible binary star, with a companion star (star B) of a magnitude of 8.12 and a main sequence star of spectral type K1V about 180 seconds away from the primary star (star A). Furthermore, Star B also has a companion (Star C), a 13.1 magnitude M-type star, located a few arc seconds away. These stars are moving away from the solar system at a speed of 6 kilometers per second. Because it is located on the ecliptic, it is sometimes hidden by the moon, and planets often pass nearby, so it has been used in astrology since ancient times.

しし座のα(アルファ)星の固有名。古くからバビロニアやギリシア、アラビアなどで「王」や「王者」とよばれていたが、この「小さい王 Regulus」というラテン名はコペルニクスが初めて使ったという。春の宵の空に輝く1.35等の恒星で、スペクトル型はB7Vの主系列星、表面温度は約1万3000Kである。天球上の位置は、2000年分点の座標で、赤経10時08分、赤緯プラス11度58分。距離は77光年。質量は太陽の5倍程度、半径は3.8倍。赤道表面で少なくとも毎秒330キロメートルという高速度で自転している。レグルスは実視連星であり、主星（A星）から角度で180秒ほど離れたところに、8.12等のスペクトル型K1Vの主系列星を伴星（B星）にもつ。さらに、このB星も角度で数秒離れたところに13.1等のM型星を伴星（C星）にもっている。これらの星は全体として太陽系から毎秒6キロメートルの速度で遠ざかっている。位置が黄道上にあるため月に隠されることがあり、惑星もよく近くを通るので、古来、占星術に利用された。
