1722‐82 A Muslim king who ruled Mysore in southern India for about 20 years until the direct rule of the British. Born the son of a Mysore jagirdar (jagir). In 1749 he served as a volunteer soldier under the King of Mysore, and in 1759 he commanded the royal army, earning the title of Fatha Bahadur. From 1760 to 1782 he effectively ruled the Mysore Kingdom with its capital at Seringapatam (Srirangapatnam), and fought against the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Marathas.
