The Lake District is located in the southwest of Cumbria, in the northwest of England, United Kingdom. It has been designated a national park, covering an area of 2,240 km2. The beautiful natural scenery of the mountains, valleys and lakes, including England's largest lake Windermere and its highest peak, Scafell Pike (978m), along with the scattered historical sites and ruins, attracts many tourists, climbers and literature lovers. Literary works also introduced the area early on, such as T. Gray's Journal of a Journey in the Lake District (1769), and in the 19th century it became a poetic source for the "lake poets" such as Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey, and inspired the Lyric Songs (first published in 1798).
