Kansas [State] - Kansas
A central state in the United States. Abbreviated as Kansas or KS. Located in the Arkansas River and Kansas River basins, it is generally flat, but transitions to the Great Plains in the west. It is a world-famous producer of winter wheat, and corn is also cultivated. It is also one of the leading cattle, sheep, and pig livestock farms in the country. It also produces natural gas and oil, and agricultural machinery manufacturing is carried out in cities in the east. It was first settled in the first half of the 18th century, and became a US territory with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It joined the Union as a territory in 1854 and as a free state in 1861. In the 1850s, a civil war broke out over whether it should be a slave state or a free state, and it was called "Bloody Kansas." In the 1860s and 1870s, it developed as a cattle distribution center, and was also the center of cowboy culture represented by Wyatt Earp and others. It is religiously conservative.
