Indigenous Otomi speakers scattered throughout the states of Mexico's central highlands. The Otomi never formed a political unity as a whole, and before the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, their residential areas changed with the rise and fall of the neighboring Toltec and Aztec kingdoms. Even after the conquest, Otomi villages were often forced to relocate due to the introduction of gold mining and livestock farming by Spanish settlers, resulting in constant conflicts with the settlers. The population is about 350,000, of which 80% also speak Spanish. Unlike other indigenous groups in Mexico, many maintain a sense of identity as Otomi indigenous people even if they no longer speak the Otomi language.

メキシコ中央高原の各州に散在するオトミ語系の先住民。オトミが全体として政治的統一体を形成したことはなく，16世紀のスペイン人による征服以前には，近隣のトルテカ王国，アステカ王国の盛衰のたびに居住地域が変化し，征服後もスペイン人入植者による金鉱採掘･牧畜業導入などのために，オトミ村落は移住を強制されることが多く，入植者との間に衝突が絶えなかった。人口は約35万で，その80％がスペイン語を併用する。メキシコの他の先住民集団と異なり，オトミ語をすでに話さなくなっても，オトミ先住民としての意識を維持する者が多い。
