Kogen

Japanese: 固原 - こげん

A county in the upper reaches of the Qingshui River in the southern part of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China. Population 460,000 (1994). It has long been developed as a key transportation point from the Yinchuan Plain via the Qingshui River to Xi'an on the Wei River Plain, and Gaoping County was already established there during the Han Dynasty. It was later ruled by nomadic tribes, but during the Ming and Qing Dynasties it was considered important as a defensive base for the Central Plains. It is currently the economic and transportation center of the southern part of the autonomous region, and is home to food industries and hydroelectric power plants. [Ono Kikuo]

中国，寧夏回族自治区南部，清水河上流の県。人口46万(1994)。銀川平野から清水河を経て渭河平野の西安への交通要地として古くから開け，漢代，すでに高平県がおかれた。その後，遊牧民族の支配をうけたこともあるが，明･清代には中原地方の防衛拠点として重要視された。現在は自治区南部の経済･交通中心で，食品工業や水力発電所がある。【小野菊雄】
