Aligarh Muslim University

In 1875, Muslim social reformer Syed Ahmad Khan (SA) established the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College (India) in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, modelled on Oxford and Cambridge universities, with the aim of providing modern education to Muslims. In 1920, under an Act of Parliament, it was elevated to a national university status and became the Aligarh Muslim University. It has produced many Muslim intellectuals and politicians, and played a leading role in the Aligarh Movement (India), a Muslim cultural and educational movement since the late 19th century. In 2012, the number of students was approximately 28,000 (about 20% of which were non-Muslim) . It has 12 faculties, 98 departments (22 of which are granted special grants by the University Grants Commission), seven colleges, three academies and 15 research institutes. It was ranked 90th in the 2015/16 Times World University Rankings.

1875年，ムスリムの社会改革者サイヤド・アフマド・ハーン，S.A.がムスリムに近代的教育を施す目的で，オックスフォードとケンブリッジ両大学をモデルとするムハマダン・アングロ・オリエンタル・カレッジ（インド）をウッタル・プラデーシュ州のアリーガルに設立。連邦議会法のもと，1920年に国立大学に昇格し，アリーガル・ムスリム大学となる。多くのムスリム知識人や政治家を輩出し，19世紀末以降のムスリムの文化教育運動であるアリーガル運動（インド）の指導的立場にあった。2012年の学生数は約2万8000人（うち約2割が非ムスリム）。12学部98学科（うち22学科が大学補助金委員会から特別補助金プログラムの交付を受ける）と七つのカレッジ，三つのアカデミー，15の研究所をもつ。2015/16年のタイムズ誌の世界大学ランキングでは90位。
