Turkmenbashi (English spelling)

Formerly Krasnovodsk. A city in the Balkan region in western Turkmenistan. A port city on the north shore of Krasnovodsk Bay, which flows into the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. Built as a Russian fortress in 1869, it developed after becoming the terminus of the Central Asian Railway from Samarkand in 1896. It is a transshipment port on the trade route from the railway to the Caspian Sea and the Volga River system, and there is a railway ferry between the city and Baku on the opposite shore of the Caspian Sea. Wheat, timber, and consumer goods are imported, and cotton, oil, and processed seafood products are exported. An oil pipeline was laid from the Nebit-Dag oil field, and the oil refining and petrochemical industries developed. There are also factories for ship repair, seafood processing, and meat processing. Population 59,500 (1991 estimate).

旧名クラスノボツク Krasnovodsk。トルクメニスタン西部，バルカン州の都市。カスピ海の東岸に湾入するクラスノボツク湾の北岸に位置する港湾都市。 1869年にロシアの要塞として建設され，96年サマルカンド方面から通じる中央アジア鉄道の終点となってから発展。同鉄道からカスピ海，ボルガ川水系へ続く通商路の積替え港で，カスピ海対岸のバクーとの間に鉄道フェリーがある。小麦，木材，消費物資を移入し，綿花，石油，水産加工品などを移出する。ネビトダグ油田から石油パイプラインが引かれ，製油，石油化学工業が発展。船舶修理，水産物加工，食肉などの工場もある。人口5万 9500 (1991推計) 。
