Teru Hasegawa

Japanese: 長谷川テル - はせがわてる
Teru Hasegawa

Esperantist. Born in Yamanashi Prefecture. After graduating from Tokyo Prefectural Third Girls' High School, she entered Nara Women's Higher Normal School (now Nara Women's University) in 1929 (Showa 4). She began learning Esperanto while there, but in 1932 she was arrested for involvement in a left-wing cultural movement and dropped out of Nara Women's Higher Normal School. After returning to Tokyo, she interacted with Esperantists, and married one of them, a Chinese man named Liu Jin (1912?-1947). In April 1937, she followed Liu Jin to Shanghai, and after the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War, she moved around to Hong Kong, Guangdong, and Hankou, and stayed in Chongqing from the end of 1938 to 1945. During this time, she was involved in anti-Japanese propaganda activities and was in charge of anti-war broadcasts to Japan, and was criticized in Japanese newspapers as a "traitor." She also left behind many Esperanto works from an anti-war and international peace perspective. He died in Jiamusi in 1947.
