Order Rhea, Family Rheidae. Total length 1.3-1.4m. As its nickname "American ostrich" suggests, it is large and has degenerated wings, making it unable to fly. Its body shape is similar to that of an ostrich, with a long neck and long, sturdy legs, but it has three toes (ostriches have two). Its plumage is generally a dirty gray-brown, although there is some individual variation. It inhabits grasslands, savannas, sparse forests, and farmlands from central Brazil to central Argentina. Breeding is carried out by one male pairing with several females. The females lay eggs in the same nest, and the male builds the nest, incubates the eggs, and raises the chicks. When the male begins to incubate the eggs, the female mates with another male. Family Rheidae also has one more species, the Darwin's rhea, Rhea pennata . It is slightly smaller than this species, with a total length of 1m. Its plumage is gray-brown all over, covered with small, quite noticeable white spots. It inhabits the highland grasslands from southern Peru to southern Argentina.

A character in the Old Testament. Jacob's wife. She was the sister of Rachel, the daughter of Laban of Haran. She became Jacob's wife before Rachel, who was Jacob's favorite, and bore him Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah. She also gave her maid Zilpah to Jacob, who bore him Gad and Asher. Leah later bore Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah. She was buried in the tomb of Machpelah, east of Mamre in Canaan, where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Rebekah were buried. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Gad, Zebulun, and Issachar, along with Rachel's sons, became the ancestors of the 12 tribes of Israel (Genesis chapters 29, 30, and 49).

A goddess in Greek mythology. She was one of the Titans born from Uranus and Gaia, and became the wife of her brother Cronus, giving birth to Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. Cronus, who had been predicted to lose his throne to his children, swallowed them one by one, so when her youngest son, Zeus, was born, she wrapped a huge stone in her swaddling clothes and pretended it was a baby, and had Cronus swallow it. She then hid Zeus in a cave in Mount Ida on the island of Crete and raised him there. As the mother of the gods, she was later identified with the Phrygian mother goddess Cybele.

Saturn's moon. Discovered by Giovanni Domenico Cassini in 1672. It is the second largest moon of Saturn after Titan, with a diameter of about 1,530 km, a luminosity of 10, and a density of 1.3. Its orbital period is 4 days, 12 hours, and 28 minutes. Voyager 1 (→ Voyager) discovered that this moon has countless craters of various sizes.

レア目レア科。全長 1.3～1.4m。アメリカダチョウという別名があるように，大型で翼は退化して飛翔力がない。体形もダチョウに似ていて頸が長く，脚も長くて頑丈だが，趾（あしゆび）は 3本（ダチョウは 2本）である。羽色はやや個体変異があるが，全体に汚れたような灰褐色。ブラジル中部からアルゼンチン中部にかけての草原やサバナ，疎林，農耕地などに生息する。繁殖は 1羽の雄が数羽の雌とつがいになって行なう。雌たちは同じ巣に卵を産み，雄が巣づくりから抱卵，育雛をする。雄が抱卵を始めると，雌はほかの雄とつがう。レア科 Rheidaeにはもう 1種ダーウィンレア Rhea pennata がいる。本種よりやや小型で全長 1m。羽色は全身灰褐色で，全体をかなり目立つ白い小斑が覆う。ペルー南部からアルゼンチン南部にかけての高地の草原に生息する。

旧約聖書中の人物。ヤコブの妻。ハランのラバンの娘，ラケルの姉。ヤコブに愛されていたラケルより先にヤコブの妻となり，ルベン，シメオン，レビ，ユダを生んだ。彼女はまた婢女ジルパをヤコブに与え，ジルパはガド，アセルを生んだ。その後レアはイッサカル，ゼブルン，デナを得た。彼女は死後アブラハム，サラ，イサク，リベカが葬られているカナンの地マムレの東マクペラの墓地に埋葬された。ルベン，シメオン，レビ，ユダ，ガド，ゼブルン，イッサカルはラケルの子らとともにイスラエル 12部族の祖先となった (創世記 29，30，49章) 。

ギリシア神話の女神。ウラノスとガイアから生れたティタンたちの一人で，兄弟のクロノスの妻となり，ヘスチア，デメーテル，ヘラ，ハデス，ポセイドンを生んだ。しかし子供に王座を奪われるであろうという予言を受けていたクロノスは彼らを次々に飲み込んだため，末子ゼウスが生れたとき，彼女は産着に大石を包んで，これを赤子と偽って，クロノスに飲み込ませておいて，ゼウスをクレタ島のイダ山中の岩屋にかくまって育てた。神々の母であることから，のちにフリュギアの大母神キュベレと同一視された。
