Order Ciconiiformes, Family Ciconidae. Average length 136cm. Very large bird with long legs, bare head and neck, and a neck pouch hanging from the throat. The feathers are black on the back and white on the belly. The beak is about 30cm long and has a sharp edge at the joint. It is found from India to the Indochina Peninsula. It lives near human settlements and in towns, and eats animal carcasses, scraps, fish, frogs, birds, mice, and anything else. Its bare head and neck are thought to be a way to keep its feathers clean before eating carcasses, just like vultures. There are two other species of marabou storks: the African marabou stork L. crumenifer , found in Africa, and the lesser marabou stork L. javanicus , found in India, southern China, the Indochina Peninsula, and the Malay Archipelago.
