…He was born into a poor noble family, and after graduating from Kazan University, he became a middle school teacher, but his knowledge of folklore, especially of the separatists from the Russian Orthodox Church, led to his appointment as an official in Nizhny Novgorod Province and then the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where he was in charge of administration of the separatists. From the 1850s onwards, he published works set in the Volga region under the pen name Andrei Pecherskii, but his most famous works are the two-part series In the Woods (1871-74) and On the Mountains (1875-81), which he wrote in his later years. These works are full of folkloric color and depict the lives of the separatists in the inner Volga region and the middle Volga, who live free and simple lives while preserving their traditional beliefs and customs. …

…貧しい貴族の子として生まれ，カザン大学卒業後中学校の教師となるが，民俗学的研究とくにロシア正教会からの分離派に関する知識を買われ，ニジェゴロド県ついで内務省の官吏に任用されて，分離派に対する行政を担当する。1850年代以後はペチェルスキーAndrei Pecherskiiの筆名を用いてボルガ流域を舞台とする作品を発表するが，代表作は晩年の二部作《森の中で》(1871‐74)と《山の上で》(1875‐81)である。これらの作品では，奥ボルガ地方とボルガ中流で，昔ながらの信仰や習慣を守りながら，自由で質朴な生活をいとなむ分離派教徒の生き方が，民俗色豊かに描かれている。…
