A former town in Kitakanbara County in northern Niigata Prefecture. It occupies the Tainai River alluvial plain in the northern part of the Echigo Plain and faces the Sea of Japan. Since the Edo period, the main settlement has developed as a post town and market town on the Yonezawa Kaido road, and the Uetsu Main Line runs through it. It produces natural gas and engages in chemical manufacturing. It cultivates rice, vegetables, and tobacco leaves. In September 2005, it merged with Kurokawa Village in Kitakanbara County to become a city, Tainai City. 84.58 km2 . Population 27,655 (2003). 新潟県北部,北蒲原(きたかんばら)郡の旧町。越後平野北部,胎内川沖積地を占め日本海に面する。主集落は江戸以降,米沢街道の宿場町,市場町として発達,羽越(うえつ)本線が通じる。天然ガスを産し,化学工業を行う。米作,野菜,葉タバコの栽培などを行う。2005年9月,北蒲原郡黒川村と合併し市制,胎内市となる。84.58km2。2万7655人(2003)。
