...The cause of the formation of the party was the growing dissatisfaction of farmers with long-term rural depression, soaring production costs, monopoly-driven hikes in railroad and warehouse rates, and currency deflation. The Populist Party held its first national convention in July 1892 in Omaha, Nebraska, and adopted a platform calling for increased currency issue, a progressive income tax, nationalization of railroads and telegraphs, a secret ballot system, popular initiative, popular referendum, presidential term limits, and direct election of senators. It nominated James B. Weaver as its presidential candidate. The party fielded candidates in five presidential elections from 1892 to 1908, but its two best performances were in 1892 and 1896, when it won votes mainly in the Great Plains and mountain states, such as Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado, as well as in the southern states. ...
