There are 6 genera and 10 species and subspecies of fish in the Cobitididae family in Japan. They are broadly divided into the genus Cobitis , which has a spine on the lower edge of the eye, the genus Niwaella , the genus Leptobotia , which does not, the genus Misgurnus , the genus Barbatula , and the genus Lefua .
