Ayase River

A river that flows south through eastern Saitama Prefecture and empties into the Arakawa River. It is a first-class river. It originates in Okegawa City, Saitama Prefecture, cuts through the Omiya Plateau, flows almost along the Moto-Arakawa River, flows south from Soka, merges with the Kenaga River, and then flows south along the Arakawa River at Kosuge, Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, and merges with the Nakagawa River (floodway) at Higashiyotsugi. It was formerly a branch of the Arakawa River, and is about 47 kilometers long. The upstream area is used for agricultural water, but the downstream area is polluted by wastewater from coastal factories and households.

埼玉県東部を南流して、荒川に注ぐ川。一級河川。埼玉県桶川(おけがわ)市に源をもち、大宮台地を切って、ほぼ元荒川(もとあらかわ)に沿って流れ、草加(そうか)付近から南流、毛長(けなが)川を合流し、さらに東京都葛飾(かつしか)区小菅(こすげ)で荒川に沿って南下し、東四つ木で、中川（放水路）に合流する。以前の荒川の分流で、延長は約47キロメートル。上流付近は農業用水として利用されるが、下流は沿岸の工場群や、家庭からの排水によって汚染されている。
