An anti-Calvinist Protestant sect that began with Dutch theologian J. Arminius. Arminius, a professor at Leiden University in the early 17th century, had doubts about Calvin's doctrine of predestination and entered into a debate with Gomars. He died in the midst of the debate, and his disciples submitted a letter of protest, the Remonstrantie, seeking government recognition (→Remonstrants). Their position exalted the universality of grace and the freedom of the human will. In response, Gomars's group issued a counter-letter of protest in 1611, and the debate became fierce due to the political situation in the Netherlands at the time (→Gomarsians, Counter-Remonstrants). The Synod of Dort in 1618-19 expelled the Remonstrants, and they were officially recognized in the Netherlands in 1795. During that time, Arminians influenced the formation of modern European theology and thought. In particular, they joined the British Methodist movement, and then Socinian and Anti-Trinitarian movements, helping to give rise to many sects in North America.
