A general term for makers of violin-like stringed instruments active in Cremona along the Po River in northern Italy from the 16th to 18th centuries. The man who laid the foundations for this was A. Amati. His descendants and families such as Guarneri, Stradivari, and F. Ruggieri produced many of the finest violins. Among them, master A. Stradivari perfected the standard type of violin, which had a decisive influence on later violin making. [Katayama Chikako] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
