1807‐74 French politician. He was active as a republican during the July Monarchy and the February Revolution, but his position of making social reform possible through universal suffrage was often at odds with the bottom-up social revolution led by popular movements. After the July Revolution, he became known as a lawyer and republican, and was elected as a member of parliament in 1841, 1842, and 1846. He formed the far-left radical republican faction in parliament, and advocated the realization of a democratic and social republic, as well as universal suffrage for the working class.
