Institutio Christianae religionis (Latin)

Institutio Christianae religionis (Latin)

A work by the Genevan Reformer John Calvin. Written in Latin and French. The first edition was published in Basel in 1536 and consisted of six chapters, clarifying Christian faith from the standpoint of the Reformation. Calvin rewrote it each time it was revised, and the final edition (1559) became a large tome consisting of 80 chapters in four books. It systematically describes Christian faith based on the Bible, and became one of the foundations of Protestant dogma. Karl Barth's Ecclesiastical Dogmatics (14 volumes in total) is a modern large work that follows and rivals it.
