1872‐1963 Egyptian thinker. He was regarded as a representative figure who inherited the Islamic reform ideas of Muhammad Abduh from a liberal and enlightened standpoint. He developed a theory of a secular state that was not limited to the framework of Islam but also made use of Greek philosophy and Western liberal thought, mainly through his own newspaper, Jarida (1907-14). He played a part in the rise of Egyptian nationalism in the early 20th century. After World War I, he worked hard to develop Egyptian journalism and to popularize education (especially for women), and contributed to the defense of academic freedom as rector of Cairo University from 1926 and as president of the Cairo Academy of Arabic from 1942.
