Collection of the Right Chamberlain of Kenreimon-in

This is a collection of poems by a lady-in-waiting known as Ukyo no Daifu, who served Emperor Takakura's Empress Kenreimon'in (Taira Tokuko) in the late Heian period. The author's birth and death years are unknown, but she is estimated to have been born between 1152-53 (Ninpei 2-3) and 1155 (Kyuju 2). Her father, Fujiwara Koreyuki, was a sixth-generation descendant of Yukinari, a master of calligraphy in the Sesonji school and a skilled koto player, and authored the book "A Commentary on the Tale of Genji." Her mother, Yugiri, was the daughter of Omiwa Motomasa, and was well-known as a koto player at the time. In June 1234 (Tenpuku 2), when the New Imperial Collection of Waka Poetry was being compiled, the author, in his later years, was asked by Fujiwara no Teika to submit his works as material for the compilation. It is believed that the anthology was completed by this time. The extant copies are broadly divided into those held by Kyushu University Library and those held by Gunsho Ruiju, with the Kyushu University edition considered to be the best.

The story revolves around the love affair between the author and Taira no Sukemori, set against the backdrop of the historical tragedies of the time, such as the rise of the Taira clan, the Genpei War, and the destruction of the Taira clan. The work is made up of over 350 poems (including exchanges of poems) that express the author's feelings of having to endure the grief of losing and losing his nobles and living through turbulent times, and are bound together with lengthy annotations, allowing us to trace the trajectory of the author's life.
