A common name for an air base used jointly by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force and the US Navy, which straddles Yamato City and Ayase City in Kanagawa Prefecture. The official name for the JMSDF is "JMSDF Atsugi Air Base" and for the US Navy is "Naval Air Facility Atsugi". The site area is approximately 5 million square meters. It was built by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1941. In 1945, after World War II, it was taken over by the US military, and in 1950 it became a US Navy air base. In 1971, part of the base and air traffic control rights were transferred from the US Navy to the JMSDF, and joint use began. Since 1973, it has also been used as a support base for carrier-based aircraft installed on US Navy aircraft carriers that are based in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. Since then, noise pollution in the surrounding area has become severe, and since 1976, local residents have filed three lawsuits against the government, seeking an injunction against aircraft flights and compensation for damages. In the 4th Atsugi Air Base Noise Lawsuit ruling in 2014, a request to stop nighttime flights of Self-Defense Force aircraft was upheld, the first such lawsuit in a nationwide base noise lawsuit.
