A type of radiation damage in which symptoms appear within a few weeks of exposure to radiation. It occurs when a large amount of radiation is received in a short period of time, and symptoms begin with nausea, fatigue, and diarrhea, and can lead to skin disorders, infertility, and dysfunction of the blood-forming organs. [Additional information] If the whole body is exposed to more than 100 sieverts of radiation at once, death will occur within a short period of time due to damage to the central nervous system; at approximately 4 sieverts, half of the victims will die within 30 days due to damage to the hematopoietic tissue; at 0.5 to 0.75 sieverts, a temporary decrease in white blood cells will occur, and at 0.25 sieverts or less, clinical symptoms will hardly occur.

放射線障害のうち、放射線に被曝した後、数週間以内に症状が現れる障害。短期間に大量の放射線を浴びた場合に生じるもので、吐き気・倦怠感・下痢に始まり、皮膚障害・不妊・造血臓器の機能不全などを起こす。急性障害。早発性障害。→晩発性障害
[補説]100シーベルト以上の放射線を一度に全身に浴びると中枢神経の障害のため短期間で死亡、約4シーベルトでは造血組織の障害のため半数が30日以内に死亡、0.5～0.75シーベルトでは白血球の一時的な減少がみられ、0.25シーベルト以下であれば臨床症状はほとんど発生しないとされる。
