Barisal (English spelling)

A city in Khulna State in southern Bangladesh. It is located about 85 km southeast of Khulna, on the west bank of the Barisal River, a branch of the Aliar Khan River. It is a major port in the Ganges Delta waterway network, and is the center for the collection, processing, and export of rice, jute, betel nut, etc. to Chittagong. It is connected to Dhaka by steamship. There are many colleges of Dhaka University. Population: 163,481 (1991 estimate).
