A full-length novel by the Russian author Turgenev. Published in 1856. Luzhin is an idealist with a German obsession, erudite, and eloquent. He quickly becomes the center of attention in the salon of a provincial landowner's house. His daughter Natalia admires him. However, when she confesses her love to him, he is unable to respond properly and shows his true colors as a gossiper. He is a caricature of an intellectual with a broken character, lacking will and action. This work depicts a typical "superfluous person" of the 1840s (famous for Futabatei Shimei's excellent translation "Ukigusa"). Precedents of the "superfluous" protagonist can be found in Chatsky in Griboyedov's "Sorrows of Wit," Onegin in Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin," and Pechorin in Lermontov's "A Hero of Our Time." However, Luzhin was the first novel to grasp the "superfluous" in relation to the historical and social conditions that gave birth to them, and to develop them into a perfect representative of the era. However, the structure of this novel is not necessarily consistent. This is probably not unrelated to the fact that the author happened to revise the work in response to criticisms made about it when it was first published. The contrived ending reveals traces of the author's anguish.
