Sukizaki Kofun

This keyhole-shaped tumulus was built in the early 5th century and is located on the ridge of a hill in Sukizaki, Imajuku, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It was surveyed by the Fukuoka City Board of Education in 1981-83. The tumulus is 62m long and has three tiers, with roofing stones on each side and a row of cylindrical haniwa (clay figures). Figurative haniwa (clay figures) of houses, shields, and ridgepole shapes are placed on the top of the tumulus, and burial tombs such as haniwa coffins and small stone coffins and offerings of Haji ware can be found throughout the tumulus. The main part of the tumulus is a pit-type horizontal-entrance stone chamber made of split basalt stones at the rear, and three coffins were found inside: a box-type stone coffin, a clay coffin, and traces of a wooden coffin. Six bronze mirrors, rectangular leather-bound short armor, iron weapons, agricultural tools, beads, bronze bracelets, combs, etc. were excavated. The discovery of an ancient cave-type stone chamber that had not been looted is a first-class resource for considering the emergence and evolution of cave-type stone chambers. It is believed to have been established under the influence of Baekje's burial system.

福岡県福岡市西区今宿字鋤崎 (すきざき) の丘陵尾根上に位置する5世紀初頭ころ築造の前方後円墳。 1981～83年に福岡市教育委員会が調査した。墳丘は全長 62mの3段築成，各斜面に葺石 (ふきいし) を有し円筒埴輪列を巡らす。墳頂部には家・盾・靭形等の形象埴輪を配置し，墳丘各所に埴輪棺・小石棺等の培葬墓や土師器の供献が見られる。主体部は後円部の玄武岩割石積の竪穴系横口式石室で，内部に箱式石棺・埴質棺・木棺痕跡の計3つの棺が検出され，銅鏡6面，長方板皮綴短甲，鉄製武器，農工具，玉類，銅釧 (どうくしろ) ，くし等が出土した。古式の横穴式石室が未盗掘で検出され，横穴式石室の出現と変遷を考える上での第一級資料である。百済の墓制の影響下に成立したものと推定されている。
